Sarah Allen

Sarah Allen, also recorded as Sara Allen and known as Mother Allen, was a leader in the Mother Bethel African Methodist Episcopal Church founded in Philadelphia in 1794 by Richard Allen, who was the husband of Sarah. Sarah Allen was an abolitionist and a church and community leader. She and her family housed and cared for many people who were fleeing slavery. Mother Bethel AME Church was a critical site on the Underground Railroad network. The Allens possibly housed and cared for others in their home as well. Allen founded the Daughters of the Conference to support church ministers with food and clothing.
